Bio
Philip Leonard Heide discovered the cello at the age of five. Having grown up in Lindau at Lake Constance, he began his first lessons with Marlies Kiraly. After completing his A-levels, he first studied with Prof. David Grigorian in Munich, and later with Hartmut Tröndle in Augsburg. From 2019 to 2023, he studied at the Leopold Mozart College of the University of Augsburg with Hyun-Jung Berger, Julien Chappot and Prof. Edward King. Masterclasses brought him into contact with numerous artists and ensembles.
During his time in Augsburg, he received a scholarship from Live Music Now! e.V. and won second prize, and most recently first prize, at the ‘Julius Berger Cello Prize’ competition. He was also involved in the student council.
From 2023 to 2025, he studied as a scholarship holder at the Royal College of Music in London under Richard Lester. There, he broadened his artistic horizons, particularly through a focus on free improvisation, contemporary music and Baroque cello. He graduated with ‘Distinction’.
His passion lies primarily in chamber music. With ensembles such as the Concertino Ensemble and CelloPassionato, he has performed numerous concerts at international festivals including the Asiago Festival and the Hohenloher Kultursommer.
In addition to the classical repertoire, Philip Leonard Heide has a strong affinity for contemporary music, improvisation and popular music. With the Krokus Quartet, he performs regularly at the Candlelight Concerts in Ingolstadt, presenting programmes spanning classical and rock/pop genres. He has also been active as a guitarist, electric bassist and singer in various bands. Furthermore, he has worked as a producer and recording engineer on several CD productions, including Mahadevi Saranam: Journey to the Divine Mother (2020), Flat Spiral: Silence (2019) and Attempt Of Deception: Bitter Delusion (2016).
He was also active as a teacher: he taught at the Lindau Music School and has since worked as a freelance cello teacher, mainly in Munich. He is passionate about passing on his knowledge and supports students of all ages – an important part of his artistic identity.
Since September 2025, he has been working and training as an orchestra academist with the Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
Philip Heide plays a cello made by Ersen Aycan in 2021.
